Nikon D3x vs Sony Alpha 900 ISO50-ISO6400 100% Cropped Comparison

There have been a lot of questions about the Sony and Nikon’s 24.5 Megapixel full frame sensor. Are both these sensor carrying the same capabilities? The Sony Alpha 900 retails at US$2999 while Nikon D3x retails at US$7999. Does Nikon D3x really worth that amount of investment? Nikon D3x is currently priced around three times (3x) more than Sony Alpha 900. Here we show ISO image comparison between the two cameras for you to decide.

 

ISO samples below ranges from ISO100 to ISO6400 accompanied with 100% cropped sample. Autofocus was set to center point and noise reduction is set to standard mode. Lens used was AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8 G ED for Nikon D3x and Vario-Sonnar T * 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM for Sony Alpha 900 . ISO50 is only available on Nikon D3x All shots were taken using Program mode with auto white balance at focal length of 70mm.

Is Nikon D3x Sensor Same as Sony Alpha 900

Nikon responded to the doubts that have been pondering by fellow photographers. Is Nikon D3x’s sensor the same sensor as the one in Sony Alpha 900? Is Nikon D3x’s sensor manufactured by Nikon or Nikon is still depending on Sony for their digital single lens reflex sensors?

In an article published by Rob Galbraith, Nikon quoted the following:
The Nikon D3X’s 24.5-megapixel FX-format (35.9 x 24.0mm) CMOS sensor was developed expressly for the D3X in accordance with Nikon’s stringent engineering requirements and performance standards, with final production executed by Sony.  Featuring refined low-noise characteristics, 12 and 14 bit output, Live View capability and more, the D3X’s unique sensor design was carefully blueprinted to perform in perfect concert with proprietary Nikon technologies including EXPEED Image Processing and the Scene Recognition System. Meticulous efforts allowed the sensor to become one of the many essential components and technologies which contribute to the D3X’s superior image fidelity.
