Is Nikon D3x Sensor Same as Sony Alpha 900

Nikon responded to the doubts that have been pondering by fellow photographers. Is Nikon D3x’s sensor the same sensor as the one in Sony Alpha 900? Is Nikon D3x’s sensor manufactured by Nikon or Nikon is still depending on Sony for their digital single lens reflex sensors?

In an article published by Rob Galbraith, Nikon quoted the following:
The Nikon D3X’s 24.5-megapixel FX-format (35.9 x 24.0mm) CMOS sensor was developed expressly for the D3X in accordance with Nikon’s stringent engineering requirements and performance standards, with final production executed by Sony.  Featuring refined low-noise characteristics, 12 and 14 bit output, Live View capability and more, the D3X’s unique sensor design was carefully blueprinted to perform in perfect concert with proprietary Nikon technologies including EXPEED Image Processing and the Scene Recognition System. Meticulous efforts allowed the sensor to become one of the many essential components and technologies which contribute to the D3X’s superior image fidelity.

Nikon D3x ISO50-ISO6400 100% Cropped Comparison

The exceptionally low noise of the D3X is essential to any professional commercial application, and it provides photographers with an ISO range of 100 to 1600, expandable to 50 (Lo-1) and 6400 (Hi-2).

The ultra smooth tones and lack of grain at ISO 1600 as well as at low sensitivity settings result in smooth, natural skin tones and exacting detail that, before the D3X, required larger and far costlier studio-bound camera systems.

Panasonic G1 ISO100 – ISO3200 100% Cropped Sample Photos

The 4/3-type 12.1-megapixel Live MOS sensor featured in the DMC-G1 offers the best of both worlds – the superior image quality of a CCD sensor, and the lower power consumption of a CMOS sensor. New technology that makes it possible to read 4 channels of data simultaneously also helps the G1 deliver 60 frames-per-second Full-time Live View images, while faithfully reproducing high-resolution images with fine detail and rich gradation.

For the image processing LSI, the new Venus Engine HD features exceptionally advanced signal processing capabilities. This sophisticated LSI separates chromatic noise from luminance noise and applies the optimal noise reduction to each, so you capture clear and beautiful images even when shooting at high ISO sensitivity levels. The Venus Engine HD also provides independent gradation control for each of the R, G and B colours, so even delicate colour nuances are reproduced faithfully.

Check out the sample photos below. Images are taken wtih G Vario 45-200mm F4-5.6 MEGA O.I.S. 100% cropped images are included too.

Panasonic G1 100% Cropped Sample Photos

Panasonic introduces an innovative mirror-less structure that dramatically downsizes the camera body. The G1 is far more compact than conventional SLR camera on the market, thanks in large part to the Micro Four Thirds System, a new standard for interchangeable lens cameras. This new system has made it possible to reduce the flange back distance (between the mount and the image sensor) to approx. 20 mm – half the 40 mm specified in the Four Thirds System. The outside diameter of the mount is also reduced, by about 6 mm.

Check out the sample photos below. Images are taken with G Vario 14-45mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. lens and G Vario 45-200mm F4-5.6 MEGA O.I.S. 100% cropped images are included too.

Canon 5D Mark II Review by PhotographyBlog

Mark Goldstein from PhotographyBlog published an in-depth review about Canon’s latest semi professional full frame digital single lens reflex. His review covers the 5D Mark II’s ease of use, how is the image quality and ISO performance. Sample photos are available too for reference purpose.

Some extracts from the review:

Image Quality: There is no discernible noise between ISO 100-1600, and ISO 3200 also looks very good. Noise is more apparent at ISO 6400, becoming progressively worse at ISO 12800 and the fastest setting of ISO 25600, but it’s still very well controlled with images suitable for small prints.

There’s virtually no visible noise at all from ISO 50 all the way up to ISO 3200, with even the three faster settings of 6400-25600 producing perfectly usable images. Canon seem to have matched the low-light performance of the Nikon D3 and D700 whilst substantially increasing the resolution.

Comparison:
The 5D Mark II doesn’t stack up too well in terms of continuous shooting speed or autofocus points when compared to the Nikon D700, and viewfinder coverage to the Sony A900, so you still need to carefully consider what you’ll be mainly using the camera for. It definitely offers more than enough new features and handling improvements to tempt original 5D owners to upgrade, substantially refining what has proven to be a big hit for Canon.
