Canon EF 200mm F2L IS USM Review and Sample

Introduced to replace the EF 200mm F1.8L USM which was announced in 1988, the new Canon EF 200mm F2L IS USM has a smaller aperture but is embedded with Image Stabilization (IS) which is able to give up to 4 stops of image stabilization. In this test, sharp image was achieved at the setting of 1/8s, an extra stop as compared to the 4 stop Canon announced. Common rule for minimum shutter speed is 1/focal length, 1/200s in our Canon EOS 5D test.

Impression

This ultra-fast telephoto, a new member of Canon legendary L-series lenses, has totally new optics to provide better image quality. It uses fluorite and UD lens elements for excellent chromatic aberration correction and consists of 17 elements in 12 groups. The built-in Optical Image Stabilizer gives it up to 4 stops of stabilization correction.
The inner USM and optimized AF algorithms result in fast and quiet auto focusing, and the circular aperture can even produce beautiful out-of-focus images. This ultra-high-performance lens also improves its durability – better dust- and water-proofing. The EF 200mm f/2L IS USM is outstanding for many available-light applications, including indoor sports, theater work, fashion, and candid at events.

Build and Weight

When coupled with a 1.4x teleconvertor, the effective 35mm focal length is 280mm F2.8 on a full frame and 448mm ( 35mm equivalent) F2.8 on a APS-C sized sensor such as the Canon EOS 40D.
The EF 200mm F2L IS USM is 5cm shorter than the EF 300mm F2.8 IS USM while its 500g lighter than the old EF200mm F1.8 USM which is already end of production a few years back.

At 800g, the SAL70-700G looks long when added with the supplied petal hood. The lens hood supplied is deep and shall be able to do the job. Along with the lens, Sony generously bundles a pouch for the lens so that you can store it in your backpack without the need to buy a lens case. This lens uses 62mm filter and has a distance scale on it.The Sony G-Series 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 Telephoto Zoom Lens is a brilliant performer for a wide range of medium-distance and long shots, with SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) design for fast, silent auto-focus, ED glass to virtually eliminate chromatic aberration, focus hold button and more. Minimum focusing distance of about 4 feet (1.2m) lets you move in close to your subject—and even at full zoom extension it captures sharp, clear images thanks to the benefit of Super SteadyShot image stabilization built into every Sony Alpha system DSLR. (35mm equivalent: 105-450mm).

Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.

Sample Photos

Here are some sample photos taken at various settings. The contrast and sharpness of this lens is good. With SSS on, Sony’s Image Stabilization
Technology, photos taken handheld are sharp. Photos are taken using Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 in JPEG format.

This lens is the world’s first ultra telephoto zoom lens that offers a fast aperture of F2.8 at the 500mm focal length and F5.6 at the 1000mm. It covers widely used focal lengths from 200mm to 500mm and as a large aperture of F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. This lens can be used to create amazing image expression with various types of photography such as astrophotography, portraits, wildlife, sports. SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass and three ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for all type of aberrations.

The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high image quality from the extremely large aperture. The lens hood, designed exclusively for this lens, blocks out extraneous light. A 72mm filter can be inserted at the rear of the lens, and a circular polarizing filter can be used in situ thanks to the ingenious internal rotation mechanism. The dedicated Li-ion battery BP-21 is used to power the zooming and AF operation. This battery is built in the lens barrel. For the convenience of the photographer, focusing distances and focal lengths can be viewed on the lens`s built-in LCD panel.
